Satoshi Horio (堀尾聡史, Horio Satoshi) has two years of tennis experience under his belt and consistently brags about his knowledge of tennis to his first-year peers. He often explains or tries to explain to his first year friends key words, rules, and techniques. For a guy with such a big mouth, Horio does not have the goods to back up his words and needed Ryoma Echizen's assistance in several tight situations. Horio has an older cousin named Junpei, who has "two years of biking experience" and helps Kintarō Tōyama from Shitenhōji to reach Tokyo.
Horio is short, has brown hair, and always wears the same green and yellow shirt. He also has a unibrow.
PersonalityHorio is a show off and a loud mouth. He brags about his
He is jealous of Ryoma's English skills and tries to show off that he has two years of English as well which is a lie since he couldn't understand what Ryoma was saying when the teacher had told him to read the textbook aloud (Chapter 110). When asked if anyone could have a rivalry with Ryoma, he believes that he can be the rival which he gets scolded for by his fellow first years. Horio never admits that Ryoma is better than him. Even though Ryoma has made much more achievements and has much more admirers (Horio included) than Horio. Horio will only say "Just because you did a little better than me."
He is often seen complaining and making huge deals out of insignificant details. He complains that no one is nice to him because he doesn't realise he is being a show off and no one can tolerate him. Other times when he complains is mainly during tennis practice/training. He makes a huge fuss over tests that he knows will be difficult to him. Despite his tennis "experience" and "knowledge", Horio constantly gets himself into trouble because of his big mouth. This makes him arrogant, but unlike other arrogant players, he has no skill whatsoever to back up his big mouth. Because of this, he is scared easily or someone has to do little extra work to get him out of trouble.
This, however, does not mean he has no redeeming qualities. Horio greatly admires all of his upperclassmen in the tennis club and is always cheering for them at their tournaments. Despite his arrogance he dislikes dirty or dishonest play, like many of his fellow friends and club members. Surprising he does possess a little more knowledge in tennis compared to other 1st years.
Horio's somewhat annoying presence and antics can all be seen as comic relief rather than a mirror that reflects his true personality. Horio is actually quite a good friend and a genuine person underneath his rather large mouth.
Playing Style and Techniques
Horio plays with his right-hand. Since first years (with the exception of Ryoma) cannot have official matches, Horio's tennis style is still unknown. However, it is made very obvious from the beginning that he is still a beginner even if he has an extra two years of tennis experience than his fellow first years.
In the PairPuri fanbook Volume 4, he states that he aims to become an acrobatic player like upperclassmen Kikumaru Eiji.
- In the New Prince of Tennis OVA 7(Prince of Secrets), Horio is shown to be a data collector much like Inui Sadaharu. It appears that he has a lot of dirty secrets about the other U-17 Camp members and it is through his databook that Ryoma learns of the immient return of the 1st stringers.
