Sakata Richard (リチャード坂田 Richaado Sakata) is a 3rd year student from St. Icarus and captain of the school's tennis club. He captained his team to the Nationals. In New Prince of Tennis, he is described as a western foreigner by Dan Taichi, Urayama Shiita, and Horio Satoshi.
Sakata has dreadlocks and dark skin. He wears glasses and is noted to have "long legs" by Tezuka Kunimitsu.
He is seen laughing a lot throughout both the manga in the anime.
During the lot drawing for the brackets of the National Tournament, Sakata sticks his leg out in the pathway in attempt to trip Tezuka, who returned from Germany. Tezuka avoids Sakata's leg, and notes that Sakata has extremely long legs (it is uncertain if this was sarcasm or not), to which Sakata replies laughing.
Sakata receives an invitation to the U17-Camp where he partnered with Liliadent Krauser in the Tie-Breaker Elimiantion match, but lose 7-0, joining the losers in training with the Drunken Coach in the mountains. There, we learn that he has a weakness of running in a zig-zag pattern during the Sportsmanship Hunt.
In the anime, his role is expanded as he and Momoshiro Takeshi comment on a training routine the Drunken Coach makes the middle schoolers do- swinging a racket filled with heavy lead around. This scene does not happen in the manga, and occurs during the 3rd VS. 5th Court Shuffle (prior to Tezuka and Yamato Yūdai) in which Echizen Ryoma is asked to leave by the Coach because his mind was elsewhere.
