Background[]

Hikaru Amane, or known as David, is well-known for single-handedly beating Hyoutei Gakuen's pre-regular players during a practice match. It is no doubt that he is one of the strongest players in the team, despite being a sophomore. David is one of Rokkaku's best players as evident by his performance at a practice match with Hyoutei. He alone defeated a hundred of Hyoutei's pre-regulars including Hiyoshi Wakashi. David uses an extra-long racket and plays Power Tennis.

Appearance[]

Hikaru has long, curly orange hair with a middle parting (which he styles and sets with a lot of wax prior to each match) and silver blue eyes. When he is serious he ties his long hair back into a pony tail. He is fairly tall and muscular.

In the manga he has black curly hair and dark brown eyes.

Personality[]

While he is very serious on court, he still tends to crack puns in between hits in an unusually dead pan voice. When he is off court makes even more lame puns and jokes. He is the only person who laughs at his puns but straight after gets a kick of some sort by his partner Harukaze Kurobane. Together with his upperclassman and doubles partner, Kurobane Harukaze, they make a manzai pair. He finds it strange if he tells a pun and does not get a reaction (usually a violent reaction) due to the fact he is so used to Kurobane hitting him afterwards.

In the manga he seems to actually fear when Kurobane hits him after hearing his jokes as shown in his debut chapter: Genius 168.

History[]

Regionals[]

During the Kantou semifinals he played in Doubles 2 against Momoshiro Takeshi and Kawamura Takashi pair, he returned Kawamura's Hadoukyuu and Momoshiro Takeshi's Jack Knife with only one hand. Unfortunately, he and Kurobane Harukaze fell victims to Momoshiro's mind games and conceded their 5-0 lead. David is widely known as a punster. He is nicknamed after Michelangelo's sculpture David for his facial resemblance.

U-17 Camp[]

Along with Kurobane, Amane was invited to the U-17 camp. While there he and Kurobane team up, believing they are to become a team however, the announcer suddenly instruct all pairs to have a tie-breaker match, where the loser must leave the camp. David wins and goes on to defeat all of his High School opponents and advances to the 6th Court.

Tennis Record[]

Playing Style and Techniques[]

Amane is a right-handed Aggressive Baseliner and is primarily a power player. Like everyone from Rokkaku, he uses a custom racket made by their coach, Oji. Amane's racket in particular has a smaller head than standard rackets, with the length of the racket's shaft being longer than standard rackets while keeping in line with the maximum length and width regulations of tennis rackets.

Because of this, Kawamura theorized that the longer length makes it easier for Amane to absorb the majority of impact from other player's shots, but this would mean that the weight of Amane's racket should be heavier than most. Despite a heavy racket usually being a negative, Amane is able to swing his racket with one hand and is able to return very powerful shots like the Jack Knife and Hadokyu with just a one-handed swing, utilizing minimal effort as he did so. This level of power demonstrates the monstrous grip Amane has over his racket.

Amane is noted to be a very talented player by many. During a practice session against Hyotei, he was able to defeat 100 Hyotei pre-regular members (which included Hiyoshi at the time). This implies that he either has an impressive stamina or is able to pace himself very well. The latter seems to be more likely, as Amane has a habit of styling his hair using hair wax. During a match, Amane tries to finish the match without his hair messing up, which would require him to sweat as little as possible to do so. Despite this, if he feels that he is pressured and cannot afford to worry about his hair, he will tie up his hair, signifying that he's putting his all in the match while increasing his concentration as a result. Amane is skilled enough to make the cut for the 50 middle schoolers invited to the U-17 camp and was able to rise to Court 6 at U-17, defeating many high schoolers along the way.

Amane's reflexes and control seems to be very impressive as well. When he bumped into Momoshiro accidentally and made Momoshiro drop the bavarois he was holding, Amane was able to near-instantly use his racket to catch the bavarois upright without using his racket to hit anyone. His control was shown again in New Prince of Tennis; during his match against his Doubles partner Kurobane, he was able to effortlessly hit a drop volley against Kurobane's powerful groundstroke.

His doubles play with Kurobane is very solid, as he was able to gain an early lead against the Momoshiro-Kawamura pair to a very impressive 5-0. As with most big hitters, he prefers to return a serve down the center line. While he's able to reorient himself when he's flustered during a match, and while his individual power was greater than Momoshiro or Kawamura (at the time of the Kanto rounds), his and Kurobane's playstyle was much more straightforward than Momoshiro and Kawamura's and he was flustered and on-guard often as a result of Momoshiro's guile and mental games.

U-17 Camp Stats [1] []

  • Speed - 2: As a consequence of using his specially made long racquet, play styles that make the most of speed aren’t really his forte.
  • Power -  4: The aggressive style which cut down Hyoutei is founded on his racquet’s special quality of drawing out his power.
  • Stamina - 3: This is the endurance he’s cultivated on the sandy beaches by the sea. To decrease the amount of puns he tells during a match, and thereby lessening the useless expenditure of stamina should be his challenge from here on out.
  • Mental - 4: No matter how he may be struggling, without being unfazed, he’ll incessantly tell consecutive puns. He has a heart of steel.
  • Technique - 3: He’s mastered the use of a racquet which ordinary people couldn’t handle. However, he’s still developing.

Kurobe’s memo: At first glance, he seems to have a powerful play style, but this is an extremely skilful player. The presence of mind which allows him to make puns consecutively could be passion, or could just as easily be composure. Is it perhaps something which allows him to focus on tennis?

Personal Information[]

  • Preferred Type: A girl who will laugh at his jokes
  • Hobby: Playing at the Beach [2]

Etymology[]

  • The name Hikaru is written in katakana (ヒカル), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji (光 or 輝), it could possibly mean:
    • 光 - "light".
    • 輝 - "brightness, radiance, shine, sparkle, gleam, twinkle".
  • Hikaru's surname Amane means "heaven/heavenly, sky, imperial" (天) (ama) and "root" (根) (ne).
